Well today is our last full day in Phuket as we leave tomorrow for Chiang Mai. I must say Matt and I will not be sad to leave Phuket. We thought having a week in a nice place and in a more westernized area would be a lovely break - but in all honesty we have liked this period the least in our entire trip!
The throngs of tourists, the package tours - it's just too overwhelming and not a lot of fun. We have certainly had some great moments and enjoyed ourselves for the most part, but we are ready to get back to exploring, trekking and a LOT less tourists. Plus - I know this will sound shocking - but after many weeks of beaches, they don't hold the same appeal as they initially do in the beginning. The new sites, cultures and experiences are what you REALLY crave!
Thailand is stunning though, and Chaing Mai is mainly jungle so we are excited to see what it has in store for us. We have 6 days there and then we move on to Bangkok. To think, in a few days we will already have crossed the halfway mark of our trip! Time flies - but we do feel like we have been away FOREVER!
As always we miss all of you like crazy. We have luckily had the chance to speak with Matt's parents on skype and yesterday we spoke to Paul, Ashley and Willis! It was simply wonderful!
Anyway hope you are well and until the next time!

To be fair, I don't feel as though we've completely disliked Phuket so much as been let down by relatively high expectations of a week we didn't get. Nonetheless, we're ready for something different...
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear that Phuket was not as great as you imagined it might be. Some down time might have helped though. We look forward to more of your excellent adventures elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteit was a great day today and after breakfast at Lizas we drove to Rosemary Beach for a great walk there and then on to Seaside. We sat on the balcony and enjoyed the sunshine. It was Valentine's Day today and so the sunshine was a great thing. It was a bit of a sad day though because my aunt Marjorie, who was 100 years old, died today at 11:45 a.m. GMT. I was sad because I remember her as a lovely aunt from my childhood but was glad that she was finally released from a life of dementia. I talked to Aunty Lily and she was sad as Marjorie was the last of the older generation of the family. We do not know what the arrangements will be yet. She is in the hands of the same funeral directors who took care of my parents.
We had a nice outing to Panama City yesterday with lunch and some shopping at the mall there. Lynda and I were successful in scoring some nice items of clothing.
We are thoroughly enjoying the Olympics and cheered like mad when Canada entered the stadium on Friday evening. We were also cheering last night when the Canadians were trying to win medals at short track speed skating and women's moguls. We won a silver medal in the women's moguls and today we have won a bronze in women's speed skating.
Anyway safe flight to you tomorrow and let's hope the new place gives you the experiences you are looking for.
Heaps of love.
